Ina Hume

Multimedia Artist and Human Rights Advocate

Ina Hume is a Cultural Recording Artist and advocate for minority rights. She studied Zoology (BSc) and Environmental Technology (MSc) at Imperial College London, carrying out a thesis on the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Ina started taking photographs in Bangladesh to highlight the situation of the indigenous communities facing severe food shortages in the region. Ina worked as a livelihood consultant on the Hill Tracts for CARE-Bangladesh and the Canadian International Development Agency.

Ina has been a member of RedR (Engineers for Disaster Relief) since 2001.

In 2003 Ina was commissioned by the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum to develop a temporary exhibition on the Chittagong Hill Tracts. This incorporated film, songs, oral history and black and white photographs taken by her father. The result was Vanishing Rites-Life in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, which was shown from January-July 2004.

Ina has worked for community based organisations in the UK, as well as teaching young people filmmaking with Calling the Shots

Vanishing Rites was created in 2004 to develop collaborative media and advocacy projects. Ina has been representing indigenous peoples from Bangladesh at the United Nations since 2004.

Ina has project managed a number of participatory multimedia projects with children, young people and communities for organisations such as Princess Royal Trust Carers Centre and UNICEF Uganda, creating unique and insightful films used for fundraising and awareness raising.

Ina is currently developing a multimedia ICT training package to network chidlren, young people, Indigenous Peoples and communities in conflict, as well as continuing to campaign for the rights of Indigenous Peoples from the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh.
