Tolo ko Tolo

Exploring the landscape of celebration and expression.

Tolo ko Tolo, meaning ’life is life’, is a fusion dance company exploring contemporized pan-African dance forms. Founded in 2006, Tolo ko Tolo is a partnership between emerging black dance choreographers, Denise Rowe and Penny Avery who work in collaboration with and a collective of Bristol based musicians and dancers.

Drawing on such diverse movement forms as Street dance and Aikido as well as various African dance styles, Tolo ko Tolo’s movement vocabulary is rich with dynamism, subtlety and a sense of joy. Accessible, playful and honest, Tolo Ko Tolo’s work speaks directly from the heart to the heart.

South West based, Tolo ko Tolo have performed at State of Emergency’s regional platforms for emerging and established black dance choreographers, Transmission and Intermission and are available for performances and workshops in traditional and contemporary pan-African dance.

“I’ve never seen anything as fantastic, as vibrant, as joyous!”
